The Winner of the 2007 TCCS Best in Show was this 1948 Chevy Woody Station Wagon, owned by George Larson, a commercial real estate broker in Tucson, AZ.

For 20 years from the early 1930s to the 1950s, Ford, Chrysler, Packard, and General Motors built family wagons with varnished woodwork. “It was the SUV of its time,” says Larson. The cars were expensive and required 440 feet of timber, and were impractical to maintain. Surfers would buy older versions of the wagons after their price dropped because they were able to hold 9-foot surfboards.

“They reminded me of a time when I was young,” said Larson adding, “plus thoughts of daddy/daughter cross-country road trips danced in my mind.”

At an annual “woody meeting” in Encinitas, CA., a surfer dude, with a pregnant wife was ready to sell his woody. And Larson was ready to buy, purchasing the 1948 Chevrolet Fleet Master Woody. Its mahogany and ash were perfectly varnished. However, Larson said, “the engine was too old to be reliable on long road trips.”

So, Larson had the Fleet Master restored. It now has a new General Motor crate motor, automatic transmission, disc brakes, dual air, radio, airbag, suspension, a teardrop trailer for camping, and a canoe atop for boating. For 16 years, Daddy and daughter took many road trips in the Woody.

“Alas, my little girl has grown up,” Larson said nostalgically, adding, “So the Woody and I are left to our memories of an earlier time.”
